Dehong House System
We often get asked about Dehong School philosophy, teaching methods, teaching staff and various other aspects. In the following weeks, we will pick a few topics to answer on our WeChat platform. This week, we will introduce the Dehong House System.
The House System is a traditional feature of British independent schools. The house system was introduced at Dulwich College in 1919 when the boys were initially divided into 8 houses for competition across different subjects, such as athletics, music, drama, arts and Debate and so on. The aim was to promote team awareness and educate students about positive social values.
Like most of our sister schools in Dulwich College International, Dehong has four houses. The four houses are: Rong Hong House, Shackleton House, Earhart House and Song House. The four houses are named after exemplary leaders in their fields, men and women who displayed courage, perseverance, commitment and charity throughout their lives. Our students will learn from leaders of the past to become the leaders of the future. All Dehong students will be assigned to different houses by the school. With houses spanning every year in the school, the house system provides a platform for students to build friendships and work with friends across different ages.

Shackleton House
Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874 - 1922)
In January 1909, former Dulwich College student, Ernest Shackleton led an expedition to the South Pole, earning a new Farthest South Record and a knighthood for his accomplishment. Shackleton continued to push the boundaries of human exploration throughout his life, and thanks to his courage and leadership never lost a single man on any of his perilous adventures. We believe in fostering that spirit of strong leadership and drive to go beyond the possible in every student at our Colleges.
Rong Hong House
Rong Hong（1828-1912）
In 1854, Rong Hong became the first Chinese born student to graduate from Yale University. He is commonly known as “Father of Chinese Overseas Students”. Though his graduation was a great success in itself, it was what Rong Hong accomplished after university that he would truly be remembered for. Through his efforts, the Qing Court approved his plan to organise what became known as the Chinese Education Mission. The students who returned to China became leaders in engineering, diplomacy and academia. They include Zhan Tianyou, a man known as the “Father of China’s Railroads’ and Tian Guo’an, President of Tsinghua College, which eventually became the prestigious Tsinghua University.
Earhart House
Amelia Earhart （1897 – c.1939）
Amelia Earhart is a famous American female pilot and feminist. She was the first female pilot to receive the Medal of Meritand the first female pilot to fly over the Atlantic and Pacific. Unfortunately, in 1937, whilst navigating an around-the-world flight, she mysteriously disappeared. Her disappearance is still a mystery.
Song House
Song Qingling（1893-1981）
One of the greatest women in 21th Century, Song Qingling was born in Shanghai. Sun Yat-sen's wife, she actively participated in a large number of state activities on behalf of the country, and put a lot of energy into the culture, education, health and welfare of women and children. She was honorary chairman of the China Women's Federation and in 1981, she was awarded the honorary title of Chairman of the People's Republic of China.
